Notes from Neale...

My dear friends...

Well, here we are, in our last Weekly Bulletin before Christmas! It's difficult to believe that this time of year has come around again, so fast. I am filled with a deep yearning this season that everyone might know the wonders and the joys of life as I have known them.

Yes, I have had my share - perhaps more than my share - of difficulties and challenges, disappointments and hard times. And I have done my share of creating difficulties and challenges, disappointments and hard times for others. For this I'm really sorry. I didn't intend it to be that way. I wanted only to share love, to bring joy, to experience my full self, expressed. But along the way...well, I got IN the way...and sometimes those around me have found themselves in a bad way because of me.

I wish it weren't so. But I can only give some meaning to the past, and perhaps at least partially redeem it, by creating a future that speaks, at least, of what I have learned, of the new choices I have made, of the new path I determine to take, of the new way I promise myself to be when the old challenges confront me.

Life's gift is that it gives us these new chances, with the dawning of every moment. And so compassionate is the Creator of this life that we don't even need to pay back for our past misdeeds tit for tat. A quid pro quo is not required. We merely need to show one moment of kindness, of generosity of spirit, of true and real patience with another, of honest and pure forgiveness, of complete and total acceptance, of absolute and unconditional love...just one moment, and all the rest is forgotten, all the slates are wiped clean, all the past is given meaning and redeemed. For the purpose of all of it - all of life - is to bring us to that one moment, that moment of...what can I call it...Christmas...when the Christed One is born again, in us...and God in all its glory is known again, is experienced again, is evidenced again, as us, through us.

You see, life has a reason for being the way it is. It has a purpose. It has a function. It is the function of life to provide a context within which the God created it might know Itself completely in Its Own Experience.

It may seem like this process is producing nothing but pain and sorry for you, nothing but challenges and difficulties for you, but I assure you, it was designed to produce peace and joy and happiness and love abounding...and nothing else.

The fact that it has produced something else is the product of our free will, and of the choices we have made with it. It is the outcome of our understanding, and the limitations thereof. It is the outfall or our falling out with God. For those who stay close to God stay close to love. And those who stay close to love stay close to peace, and joy. It can be no other way...no matter what happens in your exterior world, no matter what occurs in your outward experience.

All things are transformed through love. The worst behaviors of others are transformed through the love of those others. And the worst of our own behaviors are transformed through love of ourselves.

We see, then, that love is the answer. I know, I know...that is just about as trite and as mundane as can be for a Christmas Message...yet the invitation of Christmas is to make it NOT trite, not mundane, but to give this old, old idea...new life, new energy, new expression through you - and in this will you see the miracle that love IS, and that love creates all around you.

Love your life, then, and everything in it. Give praise to all that has blessed you, and give thanks to all that has occurred. For whether you think it "good" or "bad," it is leading you to your heaven. Like crumbs on the path, it is marking your way back home...to the place from which you never departed. To the heart of you, where you have always been and will always be in union with God.

Know this, and even your own worst personal experiences will be healed. Even your own worst days will be merry and bright, and all your Christmases will be "white." For you will have found love, through the giving of it. And found peace through the being of it. And found joy through the sharing of it. And created the magic of Christmas every day, not by watching it come to you, but by letting it come through you.

Merry Christmas, my friends. God bless us all, everyone.

Love and hugs,

The Little Soul and the sun
From the dialogue to a children's book...and now to an animated story

One of the most wonderful things that ever happened to me in the entire Conversations with God experience was the gifting to me of a wonderful children's story, The Little Soul and the Sun. Appearing first as separate passages in Book 1 and Book 3, the parable was eventually strung together to produce a children's book by the above title - a story that became a Children's Book Best Seller.

Now, as a wonderful Christmas gift to me this year, comes news a short time ago that the production of an animated cartoon based on this story has been completed and the DVD is now available throughout the world.

The producers of this terrific film used The Little Soul and the Sun as the basis of a tale about meeting the challenges in life (much of what I have been talking about, above), in this case using a child's confrontation with a schoolyard "bully" as a platform for CwG's message.

Everywhere I have gone for the past 15 years somebody has come up to me to say, "Is there any way that we can get these wonderful ideas across to our children?" Well, there is. The School of the New Spirituality continues its work putting together what I call "school in a box" (what they call Family Empowerment Kits), perfect for sharing the concepts in Conversations with God with your children or grandchildren. And now comes this terrific animation, bringing the message of The Little Soul and the Sun to DVD.

The story: When a young boy encounters a bully at school, it forces him to ponder why bad things happen to good people and what forgiving is really about. And when his mother tells him the story of a little soul who asks the very same question of God, a fantastic fable unfolds which holds true meaning for all of us, whether we're young or simply young-at-heart.

Little Soul, who, armed with a loving heart and a mindful of curiosity, will set out to learn the true lessons of life and how to overcome the sometimes difficult obstacles that are thrown up in our Earthly paths. Visit the unique world of Little Soul, Happy Soul, and Friendly Soul as they explore new ideas, thoughts, and feelings, and as they also enjoy many wonderful conversations with God! The program contains approximately a half-hour animation and a half-hour of Neale's insight into the "children's" story.

This is a wonderful stocking stuffer...perfect for children 5 and up with whom you would like to share the extraordinary message of Conversations with God. You can check it out at

And if you're looking for a last minute gift for that adult CwG lover on your list, are you aware that Hampton Roads has just come out with handsome new Anniversary Editions of Books 2 and 3? I've added new material to both books, in the form of commentaries on their messages from a 15-years-later perspective. The dialogue from God is printed in blue, and, of course, there are new covers, a new Forward and Afterword, etc. Just a terrific addition to anyone's CwG library! Further explorations of the Conversations with God material from the author

Neale Donald Walsch through the years has given hundreds of talks and written scores of articles revolving around the messages he received in his Conversations with God. From time to time we will present in this space a transcript or reprint of those presentations. We invite you to Copy and Save each one of them, creating a personal collection of contemporary and uplifting spiritual thought which you may reference at any time. We hope you will find this a constant source of insight and inspiration.

This week's offering: The transcript of a talk by Neale on December 24, 2000 at the annual Christmas Eve Service offered by the ReCreation Foundation in Ashland, Oregon.

I couldn't sleep last night.

I was up from 2 until 6, having another one of my Conversations with God.

"Tell me about Christmas," I said. "What is it really all about?"

And I heard, "What do you mean, what is it really all about? I've told you a million times what it's all about."

So I said, "Tell me again. I think I may have missed it."

And suddenly my head was filled with a Christmas Carol - one of the happiest and most triumphant of all the melodies of Christmas.

"Joy to the world," the song began, "the Lord has come."

But I couldn't get into it. I kept wondering, what is joyful about the coming of someone who is going to be a lord over us?

God! I said...I don't understand this!

And God replied, "You're right. You don't."

Then God said, "But at least you're asking a question. And that's good. It's really hard to understand something if you think there are no more questions to ask. You can't be given an answer if you think you already have the only answer there is."

"Well, I don't have the answer," I admitted. "So what's the answer?"

And God said, "The answer is that the Lord....who has come....is not a lord over you, but in you."

These words came to me at 2:57 this morning, and I pondered them in my heart.

"Then," I ventured, "the Christmas season is not just a remembering of the birth of a Babe. We'll sing about that Babe tonight, and honor his arrival, for he brought a new TELLING of a great truth - and a true LIVING of it - to the world. And these truly were tidings of comfort, and joy.

But this is also a celebration of the birth of the Christed one in all of us."

And God answered softly, "yes."

And then I wondered what all the songs, and all the messages, and all the feelings of Christmas would mean if I accepted this truth. If I really understood that the message of this season is not about one blesséd being, but about all beings, being blesséd.

Not about someone else, but about us.

About me.

But oh, my gosh, did that sound bad. I mean, it actually sounded like blasphemy. How could Christmas be about me?

Of all the self-centered, ego-maniacal thoughts!

This is about the coming of the Lord! This is about the Gift of the Magi!

But, my heart insisted, what if the gift was me? And what if the Lord HAS come to be in me, not over me?

I know that I can find a place for him over me, but can I find a place for him within me?

And what would it mean for me to do that? What would it mean for me to be not only a person who has been blessed, but a person who is blesséd? And for me to think of you in the same way? What if I saw you as blesséd? Would I act differently toward you?

I'd like to think I would. I'd like to think that I would be more kind to you. More gentle with my words, more caring with my actions, more compassionate in my thoughts, more honest in my dealings, more patient and generous and...and more aware of the wonder of you.

And if I thought that I was a blessed person, would I act differently toward me?

I think I would. I think I'd be more kind to myself. More gentle with my words, more caring with my actions. I think I'd be more compassionate with myself, more patient and generous and...and more aware of the wonder of ME.

But is it possible that we are all blesséd?

This I asked in the middle of the night, and the answer came back, stunningly, simply: "Yes."

SOOO, I mused... this is the meaning of Christmas. That... that which is Christed is born in all of us. Lives in all of us. IS all of us. We simply do not remember this. And so, Christmas was created to remind us.

Christmas, it turns out, is not about a particular religion, but about all religions. It is not about a particular person, but about all persons.

It does not matter tonight whether you are Christian or Muslim, Hindu or Jew, Baptist or Buddhist.

Or none of the above.

When you give birth to the lord within you, you give life to a wonder and a majesty and a wisdom and a love that can flow from you to all the world, and change the world forever.

Isn't this the Christmas Story?

And when we live this story as our story, are our lives not renewed, our separated selves made whole?

Our souls are stirred, our hearts are filled. And then it is we who bring...joy to the world.

The gift of Christmas is us, fully expressed and fully realized. It is us -- completely willing and totally ready -- to love without condition, to give without restriction, to share without limitation, to create without fear, to celebrate ourselves without shame or embarrassment.

It is us, choosing to forgive without hesitation, to help without being asked, to rush in where angels fear to tread. Indeed, to lead the way for angels.

Ah, to lead the way for angels. That's why we're here. That's why we've come to the Earth. To be a herald!

Hark! The herald, angels sing. Glory to the newborn king.

At this moment we can give birth to the royalty within us...the royalty that we are in God's eyes.

You know, someone once said...if you saw you as God sees you, you would smile a lot.

Well, tonight is a night for smiles. For tonight, if we really try, we can almost see ourselves as God see us. We can feel it.

You can feel it right now, here in this room.

That feeling is called love.

Your love for life, and all those you love in this life. And God's love for you.

Now, the Magic of Christmas is that it gives us permission to take that feeling, to take that love, and share it with all those whose lives we touch.

With friend, and with stranger.

With those who agree with us, and with those who disagree.

With those who look and act like us, and with those who do not.

We are invited tonight to feel this love, and to give it permanent place within our heart. To be the source of peace on Earth, and goodwill toward men and women everywhere.

We are invited on this night to walk the Earth not only as one who is BLESSED, but as one who is blesséd. Not only as the Lord of the manner, but in the manner of the Lord.

For that is what we are. We are the lord of our inner kingdom, and thus, of the outer one as well. And when we understand that, everything changes. We begin to experience the world, and to affect the world, in a new way.

That is the Christmas invitation. We are invited to begin that experience on this night.

On this....silent night.

And if we do, we will make it a holy night. And we will begin to create a world in which all is calm. All is bright.

Joy to the world! The Lord has come. Let Earth receive her King. Let every heart...prepare him room.

And heaven, and nature, sing!

The Path to Transformation

First posted on Beliefnet on Monday December 15, 2008

How hard is transformation? How elusive is "enlightenment"? Are these things even possible? What is this process, by which the soul evolves? Or do we even have a soul...

...and if we do, do we. as human beings in the physical world, have anything to do with it? Can we "contact" it? Can we get it to "do" anything? Or is the "soul" just a figment of our imagination?

This morning I got up thinking all about the Soul, about the soul's Journey, and about this thing that some people call "enlightenment." And I was thinking, too, about this business of being "on the path." Everyone talks about being "on the path." The spiritual path, they mean. The path to enlightenment. The path to transformation. The path to Nirvana. Yes, that path.

Well, I can tell you one thing about this Path from my own experience. Taking the spiritual path is arduous and challenging. I do not want to speak lightly about this, nor do I want, with the simple power of words, to cause you to feel that there is "nothing to it." In my experience, it can be the most difficult thing you will ever do in your life. Because it requires clear Intention. Absolute Commitment. Deep Determination, and a refusal to accept anything less than Total Involvement in Every Moment.

It is about Mindfulness, which means being Fully Present from minute to minute, allowing you to move into Acute Awareness of every thought, word, and deed that proceeds from you, of every emotion that builds within you, and to Stand in Your Truth about Who You Are, and come from Pure Choice in the demonstration of that.

You do this by stopping and just breathing as you catch yourself in a string of thoughts, or a flow of words, or a trail of actions. You do this by examining each thought as you are thinking it, and asking yourself, Is this what I choose to think? You do this by listening to each word as you are speaking it, and asking yourself, Is this what I choose to say? You do this by watching each action as you are taking it, and asking yourself, Is this what I choose to do? Then you ask yourself, why? Why do I choose to think, say, and do these things? What am I creating here? What am I experiencing? Then you measure that against your idea of divinity.

Arduous as this may sound, it is also the most joyous experience you will ever have. It is the reason you are here, walking upon the earth. It is the Soul's Highest Happiness, and its very Reason for Being. And once you have stepped off on The Path, once you have committed to taking this Journey, the walking becomes dancing, and the wonder of expressing love in every moment replaces any momentary or transitory "upper" that any other aspect of your physical life could possibly hope to bring you. Yet it enhances those physical pleasures beyond belief, turning ordinary life into an extraordinary experience.

At least, that's my idea about it. But wait a minute. What if there isn't even this thing called "the soul"? IS there? What do you think? And if there is, what is our relationship to It? Can we do things, deliberately, in the physical body that affect It?

How? And why would we?
